J Bay is one of the top ten most perfect waves on the planet. You’ve dreamed about J Bay, seen a zillion photos and videos, mind-surfed it for years.
J-Bay is one of the top ten most perfect waves on the planet.
The many points of Jeffrey’s Bay are the main draw to this part of the world, but not the only one. An hour drive either way from J-Bay reveals dozens of surf spots: reefs, beach breaks and other points.
WaterWays offers a variety of packages to accommodate every budget at the African Perfection guest house, located directly in front of Super Tubes.
Jeffrey’s Bay Surf School has lessons for every skill level whether you are a beginner or advanced surfer. They also have a huge selection of surf equipment from soft-tops to hand-shaped boards. All kinds of wetsuits and other water sports equipment are included in every package.
Advanced surfers that opt out of lessons can go on a daily ‘surfari’ with instructors who are S.S.A/E.P qualified lifeguards and S.S.A Level 3 certified.
All packages include daily surf lessons or day trips and accommodations just five meters from the beach. The Epic Aloe or Ultimate Aloe packages in the African Perfection guesthouse positioned on the edge of Super Tubes offers you a unique experience with stunning views.
A typical day in Jeffrey’s Bay starts with an early surfing session before having a delicious breakfast in the a la carte restaurant. Surf the best waves during the day and watch the dolphins use Super Tubes as their playground during the evening.
All nine luxurious suites are individually decorated with a distinct and celebrated African sentiment. They are each adapted to your personal needs including a mini-bar, satellite TV, bath oils & body lotions, and a private balcony with a breath-taking view of the legendary right hand surf breaks J Bay has to offer.
J-Bay works best on a south or southwest swell. From March thru October swells stack up like corduroy with clean waves in the 3-6+ foot range and chilly water temps. Winters can be cold: You will need a 3mm+ suit to enjoy the waves.
The J-Bay point/headland itself actually consists of five separate point sections. On bigger days with the right swell direction some of these sections can be connected. There is a perfect section along this point for every level of surfer, each possessing its own magic, including:
Super Tubes: Waves here can get large (up to about 10 – 12 feet). This is the ultimate test of your surfing ability. It is very fast, powerful, long and as the name suggests, getting tubed is the name of the game.
Salad Bowls and Tubes are short, perfect, hollow sections of the bay.
The Point offers up plenty of cutback sections and the waves here tend to be a little smaller than those at Boneyard or Supers. The difference is ‘The Point’ offers a much longer ride here than at the other two sections.
The biggest decision each morning over a nice cup of hot coffee is which section of the point to surf.
In South Africa seasons are reversed to those in the United States. Winter is June to September. Spring is September to December. Summer is December to March. Fall is March to June.
Fall through winter and into early spring (March through October) is the time to be in South Africa for the best wave conditions.
April through October Jeffrey’s will range from 64 to as cold as 54 degrees, Durban from 64 – 72 degrees and once you get into Mozambique expect 76+.
WIND
The prevailing wind blows from a westerly direction (SW through NW), which is side-shore at many spots and typically a perfect offshore direction for J Bay.
Addo Elephant Park ecosystem is sanctuary to over 450 elephants, Cape buffalo, black rhino, a variety of antelope species, as well as the unique flightless dung beetle, found almost exclusively in “Addo.”
At the Shamwari Game Reserve you can see the Big Five of African game: elephant, rhino, buffalo, lion and leopard.
