This could be the last best place in Mexico: Eighty miles of nearly virginal coastline with one epic right point after another.
Salina Cruz is located 83 miles southeast of Huatulco on the northwestern corner of the Gulf of Tehuantepec. Generally regarded as a shipping port, this area has little to no tourism keeping it relatively unknown to the general surfing population.
Our surf packages in Salina Cruz are coordinated in conjunction with Punta Escondida Surf Tours and local resident/surfer Gustavo Frey Jr. The level of service and comfortable accommodations at Punta Escondida, mixed with epic uncrowded waves, clearly make Salina Cruz a WaterWays favorite.
Individual group of 4 or more receives their own surf guide and 4×4 vehicle. The guides are local Salina Cruz surfers, making them experts at knowing which waves are working best based on the swell, tide, and wind conditions. Your guides will be with you from sunup to sundown and will assist you with any activities in or out of the water. Smaller groups of 1 or 2 surfers may be paired together but will never exceed a total of 4 per guide and vehicle.
Each group will receive a bilingual surf guide, air conditioned accommodations, transportation w/ water and snacks, 3 meals daily, and airport transfers. Beverages other than water are not included.
Located in the town of Salina Cruz, the camp is a short drive from the nearest surf spots and is fully air conditioned with a central dining area and 4 bedrooms. Each bedroom sleeps up to 3 or 4 people and has a private bathroom, cable TV and DVD Player. All your meals are served in a common dining area with an outside bar. They also have a pool table, ping pong table, and an inside and outside lounge area where you can watch TV and movies. If you want to relax after a long day of surfing, you can take a dip in the newly built pool, or lounge in one of the hammocks strung up in the shade. The entire camp is also wired with High Speed Wi Fi.
The coastline from Huatulco south to Salina Cruz is mainly comprised of right points that are stacked nearly back-to-back with picturesque beaches. Each of these sand-bottomed points has its own characteristics. There is a point to suit every style of surfer from the tube enthusiast to shortboarders and longboarders. The bulky headlands and curves of the coast allow for different waves to work on different winds making it rare to find undesirable conditions. The waves around Salina Cruz are true gems. Due to poor dirt road conditions that spider-web to the coast with no posted signs, and often the need to drive on the beach, it can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, to reach any of these waves without a guide and 4 x 4 vehicle. Punta Escondida Surf Tours has you covered with 3 Dodge Ram Trucks, 2 Chevy Suburbans, and 1 GMC Canyon to get you to these hard to access surf spots. The season in this particular region of Mexico is April through October when the south swells consistently correspond with favorable, or at least workable, wind conditions. We have decided not to name any of the specific breaks in this area, but are certain the photos will be enough to convince you the quality exists!
Mexico divides into two surf seasons. April to October is southern hemisphere swell time and Mexico is swept with energy from the southern hemisphere. November to March provides sunny days with surf that is generally smaller, but with dry offshore winds and excellent conditions.
Punta Escondida Surf Tours covers the Huatulco and Salina Cruz region in Southern mainland Mexico. This section of coast begins to bend southeast into the Gulf of Tehuantepec making it an ideal location for the strong south swells generated during the wet season, April through October.
