Red Frog Bungalows

Panama

Overview

Red Frog Bungalows rests on Bastimentos Island at Red Frog Beach, home to the rare red dart frog and part of a protected National Park that’s kept the island, mangroves, and reefs pristine. While many visit the beach by day, Red Frog Bungalows was one of the first locations to offer overnight stays and on top of being the first surf tour operation in the islands of Bocas Del Toro.

Built by owner and head surf guide Scott Balogh, the eco-friendly property uses high-speed boats and expert knowledge of the area to get surfers of all levels into the best conditions. Bocas Town, with its bohemian nightlife, is just 15 minutes away by water taxi or resort panga. This easy access makes Red Frog Bungalows the best of both worlds.

Surf & Seasons

The Surf

Known for it’s “Indo-style” reefs and word class beachbreaks, Bocas Del Toro is unlike anywhere else in Central America. There are 15 different waves within 20 minutes of the resort and after 20 years’ experience, Red Frog’s guides know exactly where and when to go.

  • Some of the nearby breaks include:
  • Dumpers: Indo-style left with a fast inside and heavy pit outside.
  • Bluff Beach: Steep, heavy beach break; best at medium to high tide.
  • Paunch: Multiple peaks for all levels; can become the best wave in the archipelago.
  • Waikiki: Easy beach break; perfect for learning or practicing nose riding.
  • Tiger Tail: Fun right peeling over reef and sand.
  • Silverbacks: Big barreling right reef; one of the heaviest waves in the Caribbean
  • Coco’s: Right with long walls
  • Black Rock: Mellow A-frame peeling left and right.
  • Carenaro: Series of left reefs that serve as mini pointbreaks with hollow and rippable sections.

Note: Small aircraft between Panama City and Bocas limit boards over 7’. Surfers that ride larger equipment have numerous board rental options in Bocas

Synopsis:

Bocas del Toro gets swell from trade winds and low-pressure systems across 600–900 miles of open ocean, with waves reaching up to 20 feet.

The main surf season runs from December to April, with a shorter “mini season” that runs from June – August. Though the “mini season” doesn’t usually get as big as the main winter season, it’s consistent and uncrowded window.

Year-round, expect tropical conditions with air temps in the high 70s–80s and warm 80° water.
