Ecuador

Galapagos

Volcanic islands 700 miles out to sea and directly on the equator, in thepath of north swells from the Gulf of Alaska and south swells from the Southern Ocean.

Overview

Overview

Ecuador straddles the equator in the northwest corner of South America. Surrounded by Peru to the south and Colombia to the north, the coast of mainland Ecuador covers about five degrees of latitude and extends 700 miles out to the sea, to the Galapagos Islands.

The Galapagos Islands are volcanic in origin so the surf spots are all rock reefs and points, not beach breaks or sand points.

The dozen islands that make up the Galapagos chain jut thousands of feet out of the Pacific Ocean and all sides of these islands take the full measure of power from open ocean groundswells.

While getting there does take some extra effort, the combination of bottom structure and abrupt change in ocean depth makes the surf in the Galapagos more powerful and intense than anywhere along the continental coastline of South and Central America.

Accommodations

Accommodations

Hotel Pimampiro, on San Cristobal is a boutique property offering spacious rooms overlooking the ocean, pool and magnificent sunsets.

All rooms are air conditioned with private bathrooms, towels, and hot water. The property is a 10-minute walk from town. The large on-site restaurant serves up local seafood along with a variety of local and International dishes.

Amenities include swimming pool, restaurant, mini-fridge, coffee/tea making facilities, 24-hour taxi service, free bike usage with surfboard racks and the nicest owners and staff on island.

The best waves in the Galapagos Islands break on north swells but there are also a variety of south swell surf breaks that do get really good. However, the wind conditions can be cross or on-shore at the spots that receive the south swell directly, and the spots that require the swell to wrap around the island are usually smaller even though the wind may be offshore.

WaterWays trips to the Galapagos run December through April when all elements come together for the best possible surf conditions. These surf tours focus on the island of San Cristobal. The main spots are Carola, El Canon, El Tongo, and Loberia but more spots exist up the coast via boat access only.

Surf

Surf

San Cristobal is the easternmost of the Galapagos Islands and the most frequently surfed.

Carola is a classic, freight-training right reef breaking into a harbor that is hollow and will satisfy your need for speed. Best on medium tide.

El Canon is a fast wave over a rock reef that can handle big swell but is one of the more user friendly breaks.

Tongo is a barreling left that can handle some south wind and is best in March and April.

La Loberia is a shallow left reef with large rocks in the inside line up and a very heavy drop. Not recommended for the light-hearted or heavy-footed. Works on most tides, good on southwest swell, blows out easily but usually has waves.

Manglecito Point is a fast point-like left which picks up northwest swells. This shallow breaking wave offers long rippable walls.

Manglecito Reef is a left and right peak breaking just north of Mangelcito Point. A consistent wave usually with better lefts than rights.

There are a few more waves accessible only by boat that will remain nameless.

Seasons & Weather

Seasons & Weather

The Galápagos Islands have two main surf seasons. November through April is the north swell season typified by strong morning offshore winds with light and variable winds in the afternoon.

The waves in the Galapagos during this time of year are generated from the same north swells that hit Hawaii, arriving here approximately three to five days later. During this season the water temperature hovers around 75 degrees, but it can get a little colder on occasion because of the effects of the Humboldt Current or upwelling from the offshore winds.

We recommend bringing a spring suit as you will be spending a lot of time in the water both surfing and snorkeling.

May through October sees groundswells from the Southern Ocean, however the conditions are often unfavorable due to the a southerly flow of wind.

Although Ecuador & Galapagos receive surf year round, WaterWays surf packages focus on the western coastal and Galapagos regions during the wet season months of December through May which receive a combination of both north and south swells with favorable wind conditions.

Activities

Activities

The Galapagos put the “wild” in “wild life.” Out here on the equator, where cold and warm water currents meet and species have thrived and evolved in abundance, nature is large and in charge and no matter where you go by land and sea, you are in the middle of it.

Hard to imagine a place with better snorkeling than the Galapagos, and you’ll find 50+ feet of visibility and lots to see at Leon Dormido and Isolate de Lobos. Just be careful to leave the reefs and the ocean as you see it, as just about everything is protected out here. Fishing is limited. There are tours to the highlands to see the Galapagos tortoises and also to the Darwin Research Station – continuing the work Darwin started in September 1835, when he passed through the Galapagos Islands on board The Beagle.

There is more wild life than nightlight in the Galapagos so this could be the place to finally read Origin of the Species and decide for yourself if Darwin was right.
