Every surfer should visit Tahiti at least once, if for nothing else than to water the roots to surfing's South Pacific heart. Forget the four-color tourist posters and honeymoon getaways-Tahiti is a surfer's place and has been since 1777, when Captain James Cook first dropped anchor here, giving us our first description of the sport:
"I could not help concluding that this man felt the most supreme pleasure while he was driven on so fast and so smoothly by the sea..." Supreme pleasure is right. Towering green volcanic peaks stabbing into a blue sky; the emerald mirror of the lagoons, reflecting back squadrons of white clouds sailing by on the trades; the roar of surf on the distant reefs. And the waves: the hollow left tubes of Taapuna, Haapiti on Moorea, the right barrel of Fare on Huahine, black sand beach break peaks at Papara Rivermouth and, of course, the mighty jaws of Teahupoo on Tahiti Iti.
Tahiti’s position lends itself to a potential for year round surf with two seasons, summer from November to March, and winter from April to October. Summer swells are from the North arriving within days of hitting Hawaii. April to October winter storms off Antarctica and New Zealand generate strong and consistent south swell activity.
But for all Tahiti's abundant splendor, it doesn't reveal its pleasures easily-the sheer variety of waves and logistical skill necessary to find them can be intimidating to say the least. Most of the breaks in Tahiti are powerful barrier reef passes making it necessary to have a good boat and knowledgeable guide to make the most of a Tahitian surf holiday. Our current product offers both land based and live-aboard yacht options concentrating on the islands of Tahiti, Moorea and the Tuamotu Atolls and are designed with the sort of accommodations and service that surfers and their companions require.
As always, we are continually both expanding and refining our packages. We have some exciting new developments in the works with some of the more remote Pearl Resorts and Tuamotu Atoll operations. Stay tuned to developments and be sure to sign up for our email broadcasts (on home page) for specials and new product. |
