Blue Surf Sanctuary, Costa Rica | OVERVIEW

Santa Teresa to Mal Pais, Nicoya Peninsula, Guanacaste, Costa Rica

SANTA TERESA – MAL PAIS

Santa Teresa is a small coastal town on the west face of the Nicoya Peninsula of Costa Rica. The town is a mostly overlooked surfing area in Costa Rica, and it’s about halfway between Manzanillo to the north, and Mal Pais to the south. This entire area is named for the town that’s in the middle of it, and it’s south of Nosara and north of Punta Arenas – about 10 miles of coastline as the crow flies, but in those miles is a variety of beachbreaks, reefs and points, all on the edge of a wild, natural area where the feral jungle meets the deep blue sea.

Not too long ago, Santa Teresa was a small fishing village but has seen quite a bit of growth in the last few years. With gorgeous white sand beaches, warm water and waves suited for all levels of ability, it's no wonder that the word has finally gotten out about this magical place! Santa Teresa is quickly becoming the new trendy hot spot, with the occasional celebrity, rock star or super model being spotted chillin' like everyone else.

Many of the international visitors fell in love with the area and stayed on becoming local business owners, with surf shops, cabanas and restaurants offering cuisine from every part of the world. The local Tico "sodas" or restaurants still offer amazing Costa Rican dishes for just a few dollars! Santa Teresa caters to campers as well as elite travelers.

The waves and beaches from Santa Teresa to Mal Pais are the major attraction attraction, but the area also offers many adventures by land, sea and air: renting quads and exploring the jungle, fishing, hiking, snorkeling, yoga, massage, zip-lining or visiting the amazing Cabo Blanco Nature Preserve.
