African Surfaris is run by South African Dave Renaud and American transplants Justin “Bird” Starow and Monte Fuller:
Dave Renaud: Dave resides in the costal town of Umhlanga Rocks just outside of Durban and is a former professional surfer and South African champion who has spent the last thirty years in pursuit of the perfect wave. Dave is a respected member of the local surfing community having grown up surfing this entire stretch of coastline. In addition to being a director and tour guide for African Surfaris, Dave is also owner of the popular Charlies Bar and Restaurant in Umhlanga which is frequented by many of the regions top surfers.
Justin Strow: Justin, or Bird as he is known by his friends and family, originally hails from Laguna Beach California, but now resides in Durban, South Africa. Justin attended Pepperdine University where he gained a Bachelors Degree in International Business before relocating to Durban. Justin has traveled extensively surfing the best breaks around the world before falling in love with SW coast of Africa.
Monte Fuller: Monte arrived in South Africa on a medical mission from the United States over 4 years ago and has never moved back. Monte comes from Oregon where he worked as a Fire Fighter/Medic with Nestucca Fire Rescue. During the last 15 years Monte has also been involved in film and video production while traveling the world in search of surf. Monte will join your group to document your travels from beginning to end and send you home with fantastic documentation of your journey.
Combining their surfing, photography, guiding and First Aid skills with an intimate knowledge of the KwaZulu coastline and Mozambique they have lead surfers on the adventure of a lifetime along this coast.
The KwaZulu/Natal coast is dynamic and complicated and it takes local knowledge to put together the equation of wind, swell, season and tides. African Surfaris explore the coast in customized 4x4 Land Rovers, which have been battle-hardened for whatever the Eastern Cape has in mind – from raging rivers to stampeding rhinos. The ideal African Surfari focuses on water time at the endless array of surf spots along the coast north and south of Durban. Every tour offers at least one day looking for wild game, and a night’s stay in the game reserves.
