The Panama Canal, the vital waterway that bisects North and South America, has long been considered one of the Wonders of the World. But for adventurous surfers, Panama's true wonders aren’t visible from the deck of a super tanker: powerful swells and hollow reef breaks surrounded by a picturesque tropical landscape make this Central American surfari as unique an experience as any cruise through the Miraflores Locks.
Just a short flight from Panama City gets you into the Bocas Del Toro region. This area more resembles the South Pacific more than Central America. Best surf months are from October through April when the cyclones moving North through the Atlantic spin some pumping swells west towards the numerous reefs and beachbreaks which surround the islands of Bocas Del Toro.
Packages are run from the Hotel Tierra Verde on the island of Carenero, just 5 minutes by water-taxi from the main island of Colon. Having a population of only 450, this island has no roads and is far removed from the hustle and bustle of the more populated tourist islands.
Walking distance from Hotel Tierra Verde is the left reef Carenero, one of Panama’s best waves. This hollow lefthander is high performance and high speed. During head-high plus days this wave will offer the best barrels in the region. Also accessible by boat and guide are Punch, Dumpers, Bluff, and Silverbacks an “A” frame peak which can hold up to 20 ft surf.
Hotel Tierra Verde consists of seven beautiful rooms with various layouts to meet your specific group needs. Each is spacious with a/c, hot water, private tiled bathrooms and orthopedic beds. The house has a full wrap-around deck with large French windows which open to view the lush rain forest and white sand beaches.
Your local hosts Ivan and Cookie are always available to guide you to the best surf (some breaks only a short walk), on numerous eco-adventures, or out on the town to sample the local nightlife.
