Jeffreys Bay
It is very hard to mistake the ruler edged corduroy lines perfectly wrapping around the point at Jeffrey’s Bay, giving what can be a 1.2 kilometer ride. From the day of it’s discovery, Jeffrey’s Bay has been known as one of the world’s premier right hand points. In fact, every year in July, Jeffrey’s Bay hosts the Billabong Surfing Festival when surfers from all over the world come to enjoy these flawless formations of rolling surf.
With wavelength normally ranging from long to really long and super consistent surf, it is easy to see why.
JBay works best on south or south west swell. There are over 30 breaks utilized in our JBay packages. The JBay point/ headland itself actually consists of 5 separate point sections. On bigger days with the right swell direction some of these sections can be connected. There is a perfect section along this point for every level of surfer, each possessing its own magic, including:
Super Tubes: The waves here can get large (up to about 10 - 12 feet). This is the ultimate test of your surfing ability. It is very fast, powerful, very long and as the name suggests, getting tubed is the name of the game. Salad Bowls and Tubes are short, perfect, hollow waves. Once you master these, you are prepared for Super Tubes. Point: The point is 100% enjoyable with cutback sections and everything else you could possibly want from a wave. The waves here tend to be a little smaller than those at Boneyard or Supers. The difference is that you will have a much longer ride here than at the other two.
The biggest decision each morning over a nice cup of hot coffee is which section of the point to surf.
Temperatures are moderate all year round along the coast, with rain scattered throughout the year. The summers are warm with a very temperate humidity level. A trip in December may even mean leaving the wetsuit at home. Winter, March thru October, finds swell stacked up like corduroy as far as you can see with clean waves in the 3-6 foot range and chilly water temps. Winters can be cold; you will need a 3mm suit to enjoy the waves.
