All of the surf around Matanivusi breaks on coral reefs and over head high can be challenging for inexperienced surfers. For this reason surfers need to be competent and confident. Recommended surfboards are ‘hotdog’ shortboards and larger semi-guns for the bigger days. Only a short boat ride from Matanivusi Surf Resort are a number of right and left reef breaks that, depending on the wind, tide, and swell, can offer the experience of a lifetime. J’s is a fast, hollow right which works best on higher tides and Northeast winds. Also close by is Shifties, a powerful right that comes out of deep water sucks in the swell. If everywhere else is small Shifties almost always has waves to ride. For those looking to go left there’s Pipe which is hollow from 3-8 feet and will test the skills of any surfer. Vunaniu is a short wedging right with a bowly end section. When the surf is big Vunaniu tends to be a little smaller and manageable. About twenty kilometers offshore is the world famous left Frigate Pass. Frigates is often compared to Cloudbreak for its size, power, and consistency. Long and hollow, Frigates usually caters to a bigger board which can handle the big drops and strong offshores.

Accommodation at Matanivusi has been designed to integrate the natural landscape with the luxury living area. All six duplex bures have large amounts of glass and louvers that allow the cool sea breezes to ventilate the units which contain king sized beds (or 2 king singles), mosquito net for that tropical feel, a coffee table, and relaxing chairs. All rooms are screened with ceiling fans, ensuite bathrooms, and a large deck areas; featurs that make the simple designs a pleasure to stay in.
